Ultra X Rwanda – January Ultrarunning Race
Will Ross, March 1, 2025

Ultra X Rwanda 2025 offers an adventurous experience through Rwanda’s stunning landscapes, taking place at the end of January. Ultra X Rwanda takes place on January 25-26 in 2025. Located near Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park, this two-day race covers 110 km across the country’s beautiful hills and diverse ecosystems. Known as the “Land of a Thousand Hills,” Rwanda’s climate in January is generally warm and dry, providing ideal conditions for ultra runners who enjoy scenic views and moderate elevation changes
The race provides two main distance options:
- Ultra X 110 Rwanda – This two-day, 110 km race takes runners through northern Rwanda, including the districts of Burera and Musanze. Participants will encounter gentle hills, valleys, and lush coffee and banana plantations, all set against a backdrop of five iconic volcanoes near Volcanoes National Park. The total elevation gain is approximately 3,042 meters, providing both scenic views and a challenging course.
- Ultra X 50 Rwanda – This single-day, 50 km race is set for January 26 and covers similar terrain as the second day of the 110 km course. With an elevation gain of about 902 meters, it’s ideal for runners seeking a shorter but still immersive experience.
Both distances offer optional add-ons for a deeper exploration of Rwanda’s culture, including a tour of the Kigali Genocide Memorial or a safari in Akagera National Park. These cultural experiences, along with local support along the route, make Ultra X Rwanda a unique event that combines ultrarunning with an opportunity to connect with Rwanda’s rich heritage and wildlife
