Trail Stewards Amplify Importance of Fire Ecology in California’s Sierras
Will Ross, January 7, 2025
Downieville, California and its neighbouring towns have grown used to wildfires, with an increasing amount starting and spreading since 2020. “Fire Lines” by Patagonia addresses this topic and the ancestral practices of fire ecology, with a local family providing a beating example of a heritage in fire management.
The 45-minute film profiles the work on the Sierra Buttes Trail Stewardship as they rebuild their trail network after the devastating 201 Dixie Fire in Northern California. The film explores how trails can be used as a tool for fire management and economic recovery, while also highlighting the challenges of living with wildfire in the age of climate change.
