Thule Rail 2L Hip Pack

, August 11, 2024

The rise of ultra running has swelled demand for lightweight, ergonomic touring packs. Salomon were a forerunner for the articulated harness, now Arc’teryx and OMM have their own. Backpacks fitted with Platypus bladders from Cascade Designs are entering their third decade offering larger volume for longer days and overnights.

One less ambitious option is the bolstered bum bag or hip pack from Thule – part of their Rail line. Typical of the Swedish brand, it’s packed with options and reupholstered units, elevating expectations without breaking the bank (£40 RRP).

The most important part of the pack is the dual fastening system – a broad, velcro strap spreads the surface area immediately on the body while a buckle allows for quick adaptability (as the pack empties, you need to tighten). If you pack contents well, expect the pack to match your movements whether walking or running.

As for external packing options: two bottles are adjacent to two elastic patches with a zipped sleeve on the face of the pack.

Internally a series of elasticated pouches for gels as well as a zipped compartment. Slip a 250-page novel into the main cavity and expect space for smaller items like charging leads and suncream.

A reassuring strap is included at the top of the Thule Rail 2 – handy when carrying off the pack off the body, or hanging above the mantle piece – this pack should be cherished.
