Tankwa Trek Mountain Bike Race in Western Cape, South Africa
Will Ross, January 1, 2024
The Tankwa Trek is a four-stage mountain bike stage race held annually in the Tankwa Karoo region of South Africa in early-mid February. Riders compete in teams of two or solo, navigating a variety of terrains including rocky trails, gravel roads, and technical singletrack routes between Cederberg and Koue Bokkeveld.
Distances covered during the Tankwa Trek vary from year to year and can range anywhere from approximately 60 to 100km per day. Elevation gains are also significant, with riders often climbing several thousand meters over the course of the race.
As for accommodation, riders camp under the vast African sky as part of their ticket price. Entrants can opt to upgrade their entry with prepared accommodation – a luxury option costs roughly R15,000, with a tented version priced c. R9,000. Race entry itself costs around R22,000.
